The Tipperary Hills is a public park in the northern part of Tipperary Town. It consists of 8.4 Hectares (approximately 21 acres). The area was formed at the end of the last ice age. Much of the area is undeveloped and it is likely that it is in the same form now as it was when it was formed. In the part of the area nearest the town there are a number of sporting facilities including pitch and putt and handball. The Clanwilliam rugby ground is also situated adjacent to the hills. The Hills are an important recreational area for the people of Tipperary Town. They also include historical areas such as the St John’s Famine Graveyard and an old Norman Motte. They are therefore a very important part of the heritage of Tipperary Town. The Appreciation day is being organised by the local authorities and the town's people in order to bring together the people and organisations associated with the Hills and the town so as to show our appreciation for this marvellous amenity on our door steps. Tipperary Town Council, South Tipperary County Council and the Heritage Council would like to thank everyone associated with this event and to all those who have turned out to support and show appreciation for the world around us.

A public consultation period started on the 9th of March, 2009 and Lasted untill the 3rd of April 2009. A well attended meeting was held on the 10th of March 2009. The plan was prepared by Brady Shipman Martin, Landscape Architects, and can be summarised as follows:

  • Boundaries will be redefined. The stone wall at Bohercrowe road will be set back and rebuilt, and new pedestrian entrances will be provided. The pedestrian entrances will accommodate wheelchairs or buggies. The north and eastern boundaries and the boundary with the Clanwilliam Rugby Ground will redefined with fencing and native hedgerow planting, as needed.
  • The existing networks of paths will be retained. Paths will be resurfaced with bitmac and re-edged. The paths may be finished with resin bound gravel at a second stage. The path network will be integrated into the Tipperary Heritage Route, and will include direction signs and information panels.
  •  Benches will be replaced and litter bins will be provided. Benches, bins, and fences will be charcoal in colour.
  •  Existing planting will be retained and reinforced. Native mix planting will blend with the existing hedgerow. A shrub layer will be included at the existing wild flower meadow, which will be extended. Native pines will be planted amongst the existing birch woodland.
  • The football area will be improved, with action taken to improve drainage, and the quality of the grassland.  Goalposts will be replaced.
  • The entrance to the car park will be widened to six metres and the cattle grid will be retained. The existing height barrier will be replaced. The walls on the boundary of the car park will be replaced with a low wall railings. Planting will be provided beside the ball alley, and a boules area with seating will be provided.
  • The existing tool shed and toilets will be replaced.
