Tipperary town is at the heart of the Golden Vale on the N24 route between Cahir and Limerick. It’s easy to access, being just 20 miles from Limerick. There is an hourly rail service to Dublin and Cork from Limerick junction station.
Business and Shopping
A section of the Dept of Justice (the Citizenships Section of the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service) is in the process of moving its offices to the town. The tourist office is based in the Excel Heritage Centre and there is a wide range of accommodation providers.
In Tipperary town centre, you’ll find a range of large multiple retail shops as well as family-operated businesses. The Excel Heritage centre runs a continuous cultural/arts programme of events in the community. Tipperary Hills is a 25 ha. open parklands with dedicated walkways and a pitch & putt course.
History
As a designated heritage town, the Tipperary’s historic landmarks include the Remembrance Arch, Motte & Bailey, the Famine Workhouse and the Charles Kickham memorial statute.
The Tipperary Historic Town Trail is a walk through Tipperary town’s 800 history. The town derives its name from “Tiobraid Arann”, meaning the well of Era, which refers to the river Ara.
